Andrea Motis on Lotos Siesta Festival
Probably the biggest discovery of the season as far as European artists of world music are concerned. But don’t let that statement fool you – the 24-year-old Andrea Mortis is no rookie. She was only seven when she played trumpet in big-band, impressing even her leader! Ten years later she was invited by Quincy Jones to be on stage with him. Two years ago she released the first album where she was the leader – Emotional Dance came out via the famous Impulse! record label, known for artists such as John Coltrane. This was yet another breakthrough for this formidably talented Catalonian vocalist and trumpeter. But her repertoire had still consisted of little more than (admittedly incredibly vast and high-class) North American musical standards.
Her debut in Verve label in 2019 brought about a new brand of Andrea Motis sound. Do Outro Lado Do Azul album is a multicoloured bouquet of Latin-influenced compositions with the characteristic jazzy flavour – tender yet free-spirited. Clarinet, cavaquinho, acoustic guitar, string instruments and freeform drum rhythms gave Andrea an entirely new shade of music in conjunction with her masterful jazz solos. It was undoubtedly one of the most unique and beautiful recent releases from Iberian Peninsula.
